Art Workshops

I teach mixed-media encaustic painting, book-binding and mixed-media art workshops out of my studio on Beacon Hill in Seattle. The focus of my workshop is to introduce the medium and allow participants to explore and practice techniques in a fun, relaxed, small-group environment. Mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow; this is a very forgiving art medium!

Please contact me to set up a private workshop for you and your group. I have room for up to six people per workshop. All ages and experience levels welcome. Read below for workshop descriptions; workshops can also be tailored to meet your needs.

Mixed-Media Encaustic Painting

Encaustic painting is a fun, experimental process that involves working with all kinds of materials- melted beeswax, wax pigment sticks, different sorts of papers and collage materials, paint, graphite, and whatever else you might want to try out… The possibilities are endless!

This workshop begins with a demonstration of techniques and possibilities. Then, we work hands-on, playing with materials, learning from our discoveries and exploring layering, texture, color, and the awesome joy of making a “mistake.” We will move away from the stress-inducing idea of creating the perfect “masterpiece” and instead focus on enjoying the process and allowing it to lead us, intuitively, to where we need to be.

This workshop is open to people with any artistic background- including none at all! The only requirements are an open mind and a willingness to try out something that might be new to you. Returning participants are welcome as well.

Please email Janet to set up a workshop for you & your group at a time that works for you!

Cost: $75 per person
Sliding Scale: $50-75 (pay what you are able within that range)
Includes all materials!

Mixed-Media Hardcover Book-Making 2-Part Series

With books, we can tell stories through words, images, textures, layers… once again, the possibilities are endless! In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to build and hand-bind your own hardcover book out of a variety of papers and materials, as well as walk away with skills you can use after the workshop!

This workshop begins with a short, interactive presentation about the many options available for creating and using handmade books. Then, we begin the process of building our own books by exploring some mixed-media tricks and techniques, including photocopy transfers, low-tech printmaking you can do at home, and more! After that, we begin to make our hardcover books. We discuss what materials and tools are necessary, learn the basic steps involved in binding a book, and begin to make decisions about our books as we get our pages and covers ready.

In the second session, we build on our knowledge and skills as we continue to work on our books. We bind our books, attach our pages to our covers, and make all the finishing touches. You will leave with your very own special hand-bound book!

You could make a journal or sketchbook, bind a book of your writing, create an artist book- whatever you like! A variety of gorgeous papers and materials are available, as well as the time, space, and support to create a book that is unique to you!

The focus is on learning, having fun, and beginning a process of layering and experimenting that could go on forever! Everyone is welcome, regardless of previous experience.

This is a 2-part workshop! Please be able to attend both sessions!

There will be snacks provided!

Please email Janet to set up a workshop for you & your group at a time that works for you!

Cost: $150 per person, covers both sessions
Sliding Scale: $100-150 (pay what you are able within that range)
