Sit & Spin

Beeswax & mixed-media on wood, 2021, 9” x 12”

Original painting has sold.

High-quality fine art prints available here.

The original painting is titled "Sit & Spin" and is part of my series of mixed-media paintings, "The Seattle I Remember." Each painting in this series depicts a beloved old Seattle establishment. The Sit & Spin was a legendary laundromat/music venue/art gallery/bar/café/diner in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood. I saw the Fastbacks there on my 21st birthday and they sang Happy Birthday to me. They closed around 2003, I think.

I created the original painting in 2021 using beeswax, oil paint, graphite, and salvaged materials: old maps, pieces of antique mail, and other found and salvaged collage elements from my very cherished personal collection.

I created the original painting in 2008 using encaustic medium (beeswax), oil paint, graphite, and salvaged materials: old maps, sheet music, ticket stubs, remnants of my Spanish lessons, stamps, and photocopy transfers of photographs I took in Mexico and Guatemala. This piece was inspired by time I spent in Mexico and Guatemala, studying Spanish and learning about indigenous struggles for justice & autonomy in their communities. It is filled with personal collage elements and is very dear to me.

This piece is about movement, trust and resilience. In order to create meaningful change, we must organize, work and move together. We must trust when we've found the moment to land, support each other to remain grounded, and know that we have the resilience to move forward. Change takes a long time; we must have confidence that each small step is real, each small step means something.
